Powerful Enough to Take on the Mob

When it comes to "butt-kicking" careers, accountants are usually at the bottom of many people's lists. Many think of them as number crunchers who fill in forms, process paperwork, and lead relatively dull existences. But in fact, accountants perform a whole range of duties. And their importance is never to be downplayed. Ever since Al Capone was sent to jail for tax evasion, the government has relied on accountants and auditors to keep tabs on troublemakers; including those in the government.

What Do Accounts Really Do?
Well yes, they do taxes every year, and yes; there is a lot of number crunching involved. But accounts also help families plan for college. They help people save for retirement. They help businesses grow and invest for the future. They help individuals avoid bankruptcy. They help businesses take off and they prevent business from going under. Accountants stay abreast of tax law, municipal regulations, State codes, and Federal mandates to ensure that businesses and individuals follow the rules and stay honest. Accountants help ensure transparency in an economy founded on trust, and yes, they often go after the bad guys.

If you're good with numbers or if you're the type of person who cheers for the good guy in movies, you might consider what an accounting degree can do for you and your career. A bachelor's degree is usually sufficient to get started. And after studying enough marketing, bookkeeping, business administration, advertising, accounting, auditing, and economics, you'll even know enough to launch your own entrepreneurial business venture. Although it had better be a great idea to take you away from a career that is expected to enjoy 18% growth through 2016.
