What is a Certificate in Accounting
Following some high profile fraud cases involving accountants, it was felt that it was necessary to regulate the industry further. As such, to become a certified public accountant (CPA) you need to pass an exam administered by AICPA in addition to your bachelor's in accounting. This is certainly true in most states and the District of Columbia. There are some states who are in the process of moving over to this scheme, and there are only a few who do not require you to have a degree as several years relevant experience will be accepted in order to take the exam. The exam has four parts and is taken over two days. The test itself is pretty rigorous and only 25% of applicants pass first time. Most states will allow you to carry over the papers you have passed (a minimum of two) without the need to re-sit the whole exam again.
How Can a Certificate in Accounting Benefit my Career?
Without a certificate in accounting, your duties and responsibilities will be limited in most states as will your career progression. This qualification is recognized across the United States, so moving interstate should not curtail your career if you are thinking of resettling. If you aspire to start your own practice, then a certificate in accounting could be viewed as a necessity in order to give potential customers confidence on your skills and ethics.
