What is Computerized Accounting?
Accounting and bookkeeping used to be done by hand in large ledgers and double entry bookkeeping was the standard method used. Computers have made data entry far quicker and simpler now and this also allows for data to be "sliced and diced" according to a user's preference or the need for a particular report. There are myriad different software packages available, which are designed for sole traders, small to medium businesses, and large corporations. Some are even the result of a bespoke system written for a particular organization. Some of these computerized accounting packages are specific to a particular area such as payroll, spreadsheets, timesheets, inventory, or sales. Others are designed to encompass the whole range of requirements in one software tool. You may find it helpful to familiarize yourself with some of the more commonly used software such as spreadsheets and databases.

Where might Computerized Accounting be used?
Some computerized accounting packages have become extremely complex, especially where used in a large corporation with many different departments, people, or products. You may find positions available in accounting firms, accounting departments of large corporations, government offices, banks, or tax offices. You may be interested in self-employment. The Bureau of Labor does not comment specifically on computerized accounting prospects. It would be reasonable to assume that the marriage of a solid profession such as accounting and good IT skills should be a good one.
