What is Bookkeeping?
Bookkeepers provide an administrative service by collating receipts and expenditure. They then note these figures down, and often classify them with appropriate codes. The old fashioned methods of hand written double entry bookkeeping are long gone, but have been replaced with a plethora of software which does the same job far more quickly and easily. Information and data extraction are a lot simpler using these tools too. There are various different types of employment opportunity. Large banks will have a daily influx of deposit slips, cash withdrawals, checks, and ATM (automated telling machine) transactions that need to be verified, and noted. Many small businesses employ bookkeepers to help keep on top of the administration. Accountants also have need of bookkeepers. While bookkeepers cannot perform some of the duties of an accountant, an accountant's work is very much simpler once all of the transactions have been sorted and logged. Bookkeepers may also be involved in payroll and settling invoices.

What are the Job Prospects?
With the use of software, many people and small business actually perform their own bookkeeping duties. If you run your own business, you might even think of bookkeeping schools to help you manage your company affairs more easily. As a career, you might find posts in local government or in the accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services industry. Bookkeepers are also needed across all industries and sectors. According to the Bureau of Labor, a growing number are employed by employment services that outsource this particular function.
