What is Accounting?
Accounting in general is a profession that monitors, quantifies, qualifies, and records financial matters arising from personal, corporate or government affairs. Because the movement of money, goods, and services touch virtually every aspect of our lives, it will come as no surprise that there are many different types of accounting specialties and therefore accounting degrees. These include business accounting, government accounting, tax, and not for profit organizations to name a few.

The Future of Accounting
Whether people or organizations are making a healthy profit or are suffering a downturn in returns, reducing tax liability and ensuring accurate records are always important. According to the Bureau of Labor, accountants and auditors are among those professions expected to have the largest job growth in 2002-2012. This has been fuelled in the main by a clampdown on fraud and embezzlement and the fact that Company Directors can be held personally liable for infringements. Many companies now audit and double-check their own accounts before submitting them for public scrutiny to avoid hefty penalties or even jail terms. In the light of this environment, those with formal certification and accountancy degrees are more highly sought after since their credentials and ethics will have been scrutinized.

What Courses are involved with an Accounting Degree?
This is based largely on the particular discipline. Most accounting degrees have foundation courses and then allow specialization later in the program. Others may offer a general accounting degree but further training would be required for a specific role. Typical courses may include: financial accounting, financial reporting, management accounting, financial management, and tax.
