We all look forward to payday, but there is a lot of work which goes into calculating pay owed and deducting the correct amount of tax. Being paid too much is almost as bad as not being paid what you are due since the effort in getting it corrected can be tortuous. Payroll administration is more than just writing a check at the end of the month. Payroll administration also deals with the tax on any benefits in kind an employee might receive such as health assurance or a pension plan. Not only do these figures have to be accurate, they need to be done on time so that people can get their pay and start to pay the large number of bills, which tend to mount up since the last month's check! You will need close attention to detail, and be familiar with deductions and benefits. Most people use specialist software to help calculate figures accurately and quickly. You may benefit from being able to use databases and spreadsheets too. Remember that these figures will also be used for the company accounts, which need to be accurate.
How Do I Get into Payroll Administration?
There are no examinations for which you need to qualify, and you do not need a specific certificate. You do need to be numerate and be able to think in a clear and logical way. Deductions can get quite complex and federal and state taxes need to be calculated in accordance with frequently changing legislation.
