CPA

What is a CPA?
CPA is an acronym for Certified Public Accountant. There are several different types of accountants such as those who work in criminal investigations (forensic accountants,) or whom specialize in tax or benefits. CPAs can work for private individuals, corporations, government, or not for profit organizations. Most have their own firms, however some work for large public accounting firms. They perform a range of duties including ensuring that companies meet specified accounting regulations. They may prepare accounts, recommend methods for tax efficiency, or oversee data systems used for auditing or payroll.

How Do I Become a CPA?
To become a CPA you must be licensed by your State Board of Accountancy. What you need to do to achieve this varies according to which state you want to live and work in. Most states need you to be a graduate although some will accept several years experience as a public accountant in lieu of a degree. Forty-two States and the District of Columbia require one hundred fifty semester hours of college coursework according to the Bureau of Labor regarding accountants (this is only thirty hours more than a standard four year bachelors). Other states are catching up fast. The following states are the only ones that do not require one hundred fifty hours: Colorado, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Vermont. If you want to become a CPA, think carefully about where you want to live and work, and make sure you get a copy of the syllabus to ensure that your chosen school can offer you the right CPA qualification.
