Controller

What Does a Controller Do?
A controller is a variety of financial manager with a specific set of duties, different from those of other financial managers. A controller is largely responsible for directing the preparation of financial statements. There are several different kinds of financial report and statement that he or she may deal with. These may be balance sheets, which look at a snapshot of the company's financial status at a particular point in time. Other types of report take a longer term view and allow for smoothing out seasonal irregularities such as profit and loss accounts. Controllers may use these and other types of report for budgeting and forecasting. Some controllers may be responsible for a whole department, or they may even be in charge of other financial departments such as accounting, auditing, and budgeting. One of their most important roles is in the preparation of financial reports required by regulatory authorities.

How Do I Become Controller?
Clearly, you will need to have some sort of accounting skills. Most employers require a minimum of an accounting or finance degree. Many employers are reported as looking for applicants with masters. The outlook for controllers is expected to be good according to the Bureau of Labor. The main reason cited for this is a growing economy spurring demand for professionals with financial expertise. Large corporations, companies, banks, and educational institutions all employ controllers.
