Budget Analysis

What Does a Budget Analyst Do?
The main remit of a budget analyst is in offering advice and technical expertise for the preparation of annual budgets. They are concerned with the most cost-effective distribution of funds, rather than how those funds are to be used. Managers and other interested parties calculate how much they are going to need to run their department including capital expenditure, wages, or equipment hire. They may have new objectives or a new plan for the year. A budget analyst will then review these proposals and estimates for accuracy, and compliance with the organizations stated objectives. These figures are then collated and separated out into operating costs and capital budget. These costs are reviewed again and comments are added to support, alter, or dis-recommend the proposals to senior management. Out of budget time, budget analysts are mainly tasked with checking that budgets are being spent according to the previous year's proposals. Nearly half of all budget analysts are employed by Federal, state, or local government according to the Bureau of Labor. the remainder work for private industry or banks and corporations.

How Do I Become a Budget Analyst?
If this looks like something that appeals to, you will need to be good at math and enjoy dealing with small details. You would also benefit from having the sort of personality that likes to see things through to the finish. While most budget analysts hold a bachelor's, increasingly employers are looking for a masters. Good degree subjects include business administration, finance, accounting, or economics. Some government agencies do not specify a subject.
