What Does a Bookkeeper Do?
Bookkeepers are essential for the smooth running of many offices across a broad range of industries, not just banking and finance. They are responsible for collating financial data such as receipts, bank statements, tax forms, and check stubs. With this information they can assign these incoming and outgoing expenses to particular categories. They may also be responsible for calculating total income and expenditure within these categories. Their main role is to ensure that information from these different sources is clearly and accurately logged. This information is then prepared so that mangers may use the data internally, or an accountant can use the data from which to prepare accounts for submission. Depending on the employer, you may be responsible for sending invoices and billing. Some bookkeepers work from home, so this career might suit you if you have a young family to look after.

What Qualifications Does a Bookkeeper Need?
Clearly, you will need to be numerate and also enjoy close attention to detail. Most bookkeepers use computer software to prepare the books. You may find it useful to be familiar with various software packages including spreadsheets, databases, and payroll. Increasingly an associate in accounting or business is a requirement to become a bookkeeper. You may also find that holding the "Certified Bookkeeper" designation, awarded by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, makes you more attractive to employers. For certification, you must have at least two years of bookkeeping experience, pass three tests, and adhere to a code of ethics.
