What Qualifications Does a Bookkeeper Need? Clearly, you will need to be numerate and also enjoy close attention to detail. Most bookkeepers use computer software to prepare the books. You may find it useful to be familiar with various software packages including spreadsheets, databases, and payroll. Increasingly an associate in accounting or business is a requirement to become a bookkeeper. You may also find that holding the "Certified Bookkeeper" designation, awarded by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, makes you more attractive to employers. For certification, you must have at least two years of bookkeeping experience, pass three tests, and adhere to a code of ethics.
